Legit Data Entry Jobs From Home With No Startup Fee (and the Ones to Avoid)

Updated 2026-06-15 · First Paycheck

"Data entry from home" is one of the most searched work-from-home terms, which means it is also one of the most scammed. Real data entry jobs exist and pay modestly. The "easy $30/hour typing" ads almost never do. Here is how to find the real ones.

What honest data entry pays

Legitimate remote data entry usually pays about $12 to $18 an hour. It is steady, low-barrier work, not a high earner. Anyone promising far more for "no experience, just typing" is baiting you.

Where to look (no fee, ever)

Stick to real job boards and company career pages, not DMs or ads:

  • General job boards filtered for remote (Indeed, LinkedIn) under "data entry."
  • Vetted-remote boards like FlexJobs.
  • Established companies that hire remote clerical and operations staff.

You should never pay for access, a "starter kit," training, or certification to do data entry. That fee is the scam.

The scams that target this exact search

  • Starter-kit fees. "Pay $39 for your data-entry kit." Real employers send you work, not invoices.
  • Check overpayment. They mail a check, you deposit it, then "accidentally overpaid, wire some back." The check bounces and you are liable. More in work-from-home scam red flags.
  • Too-good pay. "$30/hour, no experience, work whenever." If it sounds amazing and asks nothing of you, it is bait.
A real job pays you. If a data-entry "job" asks you to pay anything to begin, walk away.

A better-paying alternative

If you can type and stay organized, virtual assistant work pays more ($18 to $35 an hour) for similar skills and is just as beginner-friendly. See how to become a virtual assistant with no experience.
